# Taxes (for Invoicing) - Old DPO Design

In this section, you can configure which tax types (e.g., VAT) apply to your invoices and expenses, and define the corresponding tax rates. Follow the steps below to enable tax types, add new rates, and save your settings.

||| **Already using DPO's new design?**[ You can find the corresponding article here](https://help.digitalpurchaseorder.com/en/article/taxes-for-invoicing-in-dpo-1ojz1th/)

### Before Getting Started
If you connect DPO to an accounting software, make sure to use the same designations and account numbers as in the software to ensure a smooth export later.

| If your book has a PSL integration, you must also create the taxes in DPO — using the Tax Account Code from PSL to ensure that the data is transferred correctly.

###### **Step 1: Activate Taxes for Invoices**

1. Go to **Administration → Taxes (for Invoices)**
2. Click on the **pencil icon** next to the desired tax type (e.g., "VAT")
3. In the **"Edit Tax Type"** window, check the box **"Use on Invoice"**
4. Optionally, you can mark the tax as **mandatory** and set the **mode**:
* List: Predefined tax rates (e.g., 19%)
* Free Tax Rate: Manual entry when creating the invoice
* Searchable List

5. Complete the step by clicking **"Save"**

| Taxes are only applicable to Invoices and Expenses.

###### **Step 2: Add Tax Rate**
If you use the "List" mode, you can now define specific tax rates:

1. Click on the small **arrow** next to the tax type to expand the options
2. Select the **plus symbol** to add a new tax rate
3. In the **"Add Tax Rate"** window, enter the following details:
* **Designation (e.g. VAT 7 % )**
* **Tax Rate in %**
* **Validity Period (optional)**
* **Cost Account / Accounting Account**

4. Save the entry. The tax rate is now active and can be used when creating invoices

| If taxes are not showing in the correct order, simply add 1, 2, 3, etc. in front of their names to force the order you want.
